Just Musings
My name is Mitch Terrusa and I have ideas that I put in notebooks and lose so I am putting it on this website so I can literally collect my thoughts. Maybe someone will benefit from my musings someday.
Surfer Philosophy
Kary's Chiding
My high school friend, Kary and I were talking and I brought up a book whose name I have forgotten. The philosophy of the book was that in the surfer world, there is a belief that the perfect wave comes as the 7th wave of the 7th set. Contrasting this philosophy with my own, I preferred to take every potentially good wave that came along. It was this philosophy of mine that helped me explain why I would go out with different people frequently, and why I would do things I had never done before simply because I had never done them before.
I explained that to wait all summer for the ‘perfect wave’ was an idea that I understood – to wait for the best experience – the best memory – the one that would be burned into my memories so that I could someday relive it as an ultimate experience. I didn’t share the desire to do so. I prefer to experience each wave I can as they come along and enjoy every moment of every day instead of waiting – perhaps all summer – for the one wave which I could easily miss if it came at night.
Expanding the philosophy beyond the surfer realm, applying the concept to a life paradigm, there were stories of men and women who waited for that perfect love – a love that would make life complete only to miss out on all the imperfect yet perfectly enjoyable encounters life presented and never realize that one love. To wait for or work for that perfect situation, job, partner, is fine for some, I explained, but for me – I’d prefer to take life as it comes and make the most of it.
I asked her to imagine being a surfer – waiting out past the lesser breakers. The lone surfer sitting on the board and getting sunburned watching for that wave counting sets and hoping for that perfect wave while the other surfers ride wave after wave. Who is to say those surfers won’t be able to recognize and also ride that perfect wave when it comes along? They may miss the perfect wave but have they not filled their days with many enjoyable waves?
Kary commented that she thought surfers aren't that deep. She told me that I think too much. You are probably right, Kary.

Brain Trust
- An Electronic Advisor
Develop a business program and methodology that collects the decisions of top executives and managers including the reasoning of the decision maker and give it a contextual view by including the environmental circumstances at the time of the decision and the resulting short, intermediate, and long term effects. Then the program collates them into usable advisory actions – an electronic advisor or board of directors -- to current executives. Over time, the founder and his or her successors will have created an historic record of cause and effect actions that can be built on by the successors of the business. This should result in an ever improving organization if properly executed.

Complete Business Services
Common Needs Shared Expenses
All businesses have needs in common. All common business services could be centralized and managed for the entrepreneur tying together existing companies at a price that would cost the business owner less than he could do by hiring within the company. Each service would be expert in its field and a menu of services could be added with differing levels of service within the structure. As the business grows, industry specialists could market to unique industries to better serve them, keeping the core specialists that are common to all businesses.

Standardized Education Shift
Equal Educational Program
Standardized Structured Education
Starting with the acceptance of the following paradigms:
1. Standardized teaching is the only way to certify competency of students entering the workforce.
2. The best teachers and approaches should be sought out and recorded with an emphasis first on actual classroom results, second based on student selection.
3. Teachers can utilize (and learn from) the best teachers while providing individual assistance after the Standardize Presentation. Teachers are then free to help individual students master information with practice and additional support
4. Students must demonstrate mastery of each lesson before continuing on. Students then are not held back by slower students and slower students get the additional time and support to master the information.
5. Students will rise to the level of their capacity and ambition. Retraining is a permanent option for those who want to further themselves.
6. Each teacher must continue to teach or the “best teachers” will not come from the pool of teachers that exist once a generation has gone through a cycle of Standardized Presentations. Emphasis should be on continually improving the lessons of the Standardized Presentation.
7. Incentives to improve the Standardized Presentation in a cooperative manner should be developed. A single segment improvement can be put forward for consideration and compensation commensurate with the adopted changes.
By standardizing each and every lesson to create the foundation of education for all students, every student will exit traditional school with the access to the same knowledge, a minimum competency level that is proven, and predictable performance in the job market.
Specialized training can continue once the foundation is laid for all education. Those interested in and capable of attaining higher and specialized education, may continue by selecting a specialization track for which mastery is the sole standard and all students will progress at their own pace until they succeed or quit.
Companies that can have employee skills predetermined can standardize their pay offerings – for example, a high school graduate would get a base pay of minimum wage plus $1 starting salary and a college graduate with specialized skills in word processing level 3 would qualify for a level 3 salary that in all industry is understood and can therefore be truly competitive. Additional training and certification would make the employee more valuable and so, would qualify for a higher salary. As a result, a more democratic and competitive workforce that has predictable skills would continually train until he or she would rise to the level of their ability and ambition. The less ambitious would find a level of satisfaction and the ambitious would know exactly what they would need to do to rise to the next level and once qualified, would seek out or wait for an opening. This would characteristically and fundamentally alter the corporate competition in that promotion would primarily be certification based rather that based on office politics. Ethically, the promotions would at least start with certifiably qualified candidates.
Bonuses would still be given for talents that don’t fall within the skill standards, but there would be far less incidence of clever incompetence being promoted if mastery of a topic or skill can be certified.
The creative arts, and competitive sports would command their own salary levels as usual, but even in these fields the grist of everyday corporate productivity would be based on solid competence rather than a Human Resource Manager’s guesswork.
This new education strategy will eventually create opportunities for the best teachers and their presentation creators, for educational guidelines and the dynamic updates that will undoubtedly occur as new and better ways are created, and the volume and pertinence of knowledge expands.
Structured learning could be the foundation of national and eventually, international education so that the importance of education will be one of the most important and influential forces on the planet.
Who determines the veracity and accuracy of the content then also becomes an important issue. Care must be taken to include the widest possible cross section of society to determine foundational education. All socio-economic and ethnic groups would need proper oversight to ensure fairness. The implementation of such a program would eventually create a society with a common foundation of knowledge, ethics, and social standards that would go a long way to creating an equitable social environment. Government propaganda must be minimized in this effort.
Eventually, all students can be on their own educational program with teachers there to assist and tutor when a student becomes stuck or needs additional support. I envision student stations that track a students progress and mastery and reporting the progress to the teachers and coordinators. When many students need assistance on a particular lesson or course, that course should be reviewed and made more successful. If there are foundational issues, the lesson can have a prologue with the appropriate content to allow the lesson to progress properly. In this way, all standardized education will improve with each succeeding year of evaluation and improvement.
Teachers, too will benefit from exposure to the best-of-the-best teachers making each teacher eventually as good as the teacher exampled. Teachers would be responsible for a bank of knowledge with student progress into and out of the qualification of the teacher.
I see classrooms at first, but with the advancement of my HOME –BASED SCHOOL CONCEPT, the students will be able to be taught at home and monitored by teachers remotely. This will save tremendous transportation costs and travel time, traffic congestion, fuel expenses, supervision structures will also change and could be reduced.
Education will flow from a central state supply center and students and teachers would follow the curriculum already developed. Each student would pull from the Central Education Center the precise lesson they are required to master. In this scenario, additional protections would need to be in place to certify that the person taking the lesson is the student that should be taking it.
Central Education Centers would also contain libraries open from the home classroom and work center that would provide information and research capabilities operated by voice or keyboard and eventually implants. All human knowledge would be contained in these libraries and except for classified information, would be available for all humanity through computer networks or whatever the method of information dissemination is developed. The World College would be responsible for gathering and verifying the accuracy of the information or labeling it with the appropriate reliability grade from pure fiction to unverified truth to fully accurate and the World Library would be responsible for topic classification, multiple access methods, translations, and dissemination.
A free world has the responsibility to maintain that freedom with intelligence, interdependence, mutual respect, and a doctrine that holds a set of values in common. Those values must be defended against all violators.
[Editorial Note: “No Child Left Behind Act”, while noble in concept is irretrievably flawed in that the program sets children and teachers up for failure by not taking into consideration that all children learn at differing paces and no one methodology incorporates all learning styles. Best practices, such as reteaching, or spending more time with students to establish broader learning, or spontaneous teaching arising from the inspiration of a teachable moment is scuttled to maintain the rigorous educational pace therefore the ‘No Child Left Behind Program” is really just the opposite: It should be properly named: “Every Child Left Behind Act.” If ever fully integrated, there will be far more people who think like George Bush, Jr. and maybe that is the plan… but not a good one.
If a methodology could be developed that encompassed all learning styles, then all teachers would need to be instructed to conduct classes only with this methodology. Learning modalities could be split into learning style focused training. Then, it would be critical to properly identify the best pathway training for each student. An improperly identified student would suffer severe and needless impediments by an instruction path that was inappropriate.]
Freedom is dependent on an educated citizenry. The Free must make intelligent decisions and therefore must have a solid educational foundation to rely on to make good judgments.
